Xiaomi was founded in 2010 in Beijing by Lei Jun and several partners. The
company initially focused on smartphone software before transitioning to hardware
production, launching its first smartphone in 2011. Xiaomi grew rapidly in its
domestic market, becoming one of China's top smartphone brands within a few years
through an innovative online sales model, competitive pricing, and a strong fan
community. However, by the mid-2010s, the Chinese smartphone market began to
slow. Market saturation, intensifying competition from established rivals such as
Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo, and the maturing of domestic demand created significant
pressure on Xiaomi's home market growth.
Faced with these domestic constraints, Xiaomi turned to international markets
as a strategic imperative. Emerging markets presented attractive opportunities: many
countries in South and Southeast Asia, as well as other regions, had low smartphone
penetration and large populations of first-time buyers. Simultaneously, Xiaomi had
developed internal capabilities that positioned it well for international expansion -
a cost- efficient business model, an online-centric marketing approach, and an
expanding ecosystem of connected devices including smartphones, smart TVs,
wearables, and IoT products. These strengths, combined with external opportunities,
propelled Xiaomi's first major overseas entry into India in 2014, followed by
expansion into Southeast Asia, Europe, and other regions over the subsequent decade.
This study aims to analyze Xiaomi's international expansion strategies and
evaluate its performance in global markets. The research focuses on three central
questions: first, what expansion strategies has Xiaomi adopted in global markets;
second, how did Xiaomi adjust its strategies across different markets and what were
the results; and third, what challenges did Xiaomi face during international
expansion and what factors contributed to its success. By addressing these
questions, the thesis seeks to move beyond descriptive narrative to provide a
theoretically grounded, analytically rigorous, and managerially relevant evaluation
of Xiaomi’s global trajectory.
The study employs a single-case study design focused on Xiaomi
Corporation. This approach enables in-depth examination of the company's strategic
decisions, market entries, and performance outcomes across multiple regions. The
research relies on secondary data, including Xiaomi's annual reports, industry reports
from recognized trackers such as Canalys, IDC, and Counterpoint Research,
academic studies, and reputable news sources. A structured literature review
connects the case study with established international business theories,
including the Uppsala model, Dunning's OLI paradigm, Porter's Diamond model,
and institutional theory. The analysis integrates qualitative strategic tools - PESTEL
analysis, Porter’s Five Forces, SWOT analysis – with quantitative financial evaluation,
including compound annual growth rate calculations, net present value analysis, return
on investment metrics, and sensitivity analysis. This mixed-method approach ensures
that the findings are not merely descriptive but analytically robust and economically
justified.
The thesi s is organized into three integrated chapters. Chapter 1 establishes
the theoretical foundation and research design, providing a critical literature review,
introducing the analytical frameworks, detailing the methodology, and outlining the
thesis structure. Chapter 2 conducts empirical analysis of Xiaomi’s global
expansion, examining product strategy, pricing strategy, promotion and
branding, and distribution channels across key markets including India,
Southeast Asia, and Europe. Chapter 3 delivers strategic evaluation and managerial
recommendations, constructing three alternative scenarios, performing quantitative
economic analysis using capital budgeting techniques, establishing efficiency metrics
for implementation monitoring, conducting sensitivity analysis to test robustness, and
concluding with evidence-based recommendations for Xiaomi's future international
strategy.
By combining theoretical frameworks with empirical evidence and economic
justification, this thesis aims to contribute both to academic understanding of
emerging market multinational internationalization and to practical managerial
knowledge for technology firms pursuing global growth. The findings offer insights
into how companies can balance the tensions between scale and margin, between
global efficiency and local adaptation, and between short-term performance and
long-term strategic positioning.
