Abstract
Abstract. This work examines the impact of climate change on soil erosion, a major threat to soil health and agricultural productivity. Soil erosion leads to the loss of fertile topsoil and essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Over the next 50 years, soil fertility in Ukraine is expected to decline significantly due to climate change, intensive land use, and deforestation. Annually, Ukraine loses 300-600 million tons of soil, along with substantial amounts of humus and nutrients. The reallocation of erosion-prone lands for agricultural use has worsened soil degradation. Effective monitoring and soil conservation strategies are critical. The proposed Soil Conservation Index (SCI) assesses erosion risk by comparing the mass of the humus horizon to annual soil loss probability. Addressing the combined effects of climate change and anthropogenic factors is essential for sustaining soil health and agricultural productivity.
